About 4,000 British Christians have been protesting outside Parliament this week as the House of Lords debated the measure.

The body voted 199-68 against a motion calling for the regulation to be scrapped.

Under the law, churches could be forced to rent out halls for gay wedding receptions, and Christian innkeepers could be prosecuted for refusing to rent rooms to gay couples.

Christian activists submitted a petition to Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday, saying such laws violate Biblical teaching.

Andrea Minichello Williams, a protest organizer, said that the petition submitted to Buckingham Palace was signed by 10,000 Christians. ...

BEIJING – A sleek, swept-wing fighter-bomber dubbed the "Jian-10," unveiled here last week, is more than just another jet plane. It is China's calling card, announcing Beijing's arrival among the top ranks of military manufacturers.

Powered by Chinese engines and firing Chinese precision-guided missiles, the locally built Jian-10 has "allowed China to become the fourth country in the world" to have developed such a capability, "narrowing the gap with advanced nations," boasted Geng Ruguang, deputy general manager of the plane's manufacturer, Avic-I.

The latest fruit of a military modernization drive that has produced an indigenous Chinese nuclear attack submarine, early warning aircraft, frigates and destroyers, cruise missiles, and computerized command and control systems, the Jian-10 is "a decisive step by China toward becoming an aviation power," the official Xinhua news agency declared.

The plane is also a new symbol of China's role-reversal in the global arms industry. "Most technology analysts have been surprised by the speed with which China has gone from being an arms-buying country to one with real promise of being a producer of front-edge military technology," says Denny Roy, senior researcher at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Honolulu.

Many of the high-profile cases of Christian persecution are happening in Muslim nations these days, where converting from Islam to Christianity routinely is considered a "crime" worthy of the death penalty. But a Cuban pastor can attest to the fact that the historical persecution of Christians under Communist governments continues.

The pastor, Rev. Carlos Lamelas, was arrested early in 2006 and served about four months in a prison before judges in a secret proceeding declared him innocent of the charge of human trafficking, but guilty on a previously unannounced count of falsifying documents, according to a report from Voice of the Martyrs.

He was accused of trying to help Cubans who wished to leave the oppressive nation for freer lives elsewhere. A report cited by VOM said the judges imposed a fine of 1,000 Cuban pesos, or about $45, on the documents charge, even though the trafficking count could have netted him nine years in prison.

"Even though this (penalty) is favorable, we are not satisfied. If a crime of falsification truly had been committed, that would make me an accomplice to trafficking in humans, and I would not have been acquitted," Lamelas told Compass News. "How can it be that I am innocent of the original crime, and nevertheless guilty of the one they later invented?"

He had been arrested on Feb. 20, 2006, and taken to the Villa Marista Detention Center where he was held for months, being given only weekly 15-minute meetings with his family.

The pastor with the Church of God, based in Anderson, Ind., also lost a computer and other office equipment as well as a number of personal documents when authorities searched his Havana home.

Then came the allegations that he was helping people leave Cuba illegally. Four months later he was released without explanation, and his subsequent acquittal of the trafficking charge and conviction on the documents charge also came without explanation.

The pastor had been key to starting a number of house churches while serving his own church congregation on The Isle of Youth, and moved to Havana after being elected national president for his denomination.

Reports say his troubles began after he refused to sign a government-required loyalty pledge to the Communist regime headed by Fidel Castro, because he considered the government control of the church unconstitutional.

Leaders in Cuba's Christian community, however, have expressed their concern that the actions against Lamelas are part of a harassment campaign to silence a dynamic leader in the Christian church. ...

More than half of ethnic Norwegian women under age 25 choose abortion if they get pregnant, according to a new study. The professor behind the study calls the statistic "surprising" and "worrisome."

A woman's right to choose abortion is deeply engrained in Norwegian society, but it's only most common among young women and women with little education, says Professor Anne Eskild of Akershus University Hospital.

Eskild's study marked the first time that researchers tracked the incidence of abortions and births among ethnic Norwegian women. Results showed major differences between those who chose to abort and those who chose to give birth.

More than half of pregnant women under 25 chose abortion, a rate double that for pregnant women over 40. The abortion rate for women under age 20 was nine times higher than that for women over 40.

Only 2.9 percent of women with a university education chose abortion, according to the study. ...

PIERRE, S.D. - A federal appeals court has agreed to rehear a challenge of a 2005 South Dakota law that would require doctors to tell women seeking abortions that the procedure ends a human life.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Tuesday that the full 11-judge court will hear arguments April 11 in St. Louis.

A three-judge panel of the court had ruled 2-1 in October to uphold a lower court's order blocking enforcement of the law until that court decides a lawsuit challenging its constitutionality.

The appeals court only grants about one in 50 requests for a full court rehearing, state Attorney General Larry Long said Wednesday. "This is a rare and unusual event, and we're just delighted."

The temporary restraining order was issued by U.S. District Judge Karen Schreier in Rapid City, who said plaintiff Planned Parenthood has a fair chance of succeeding in its claim that the law violates doctors' free-speech rights.

The 2005 measure is not a direct challenge to the constitutionality of abortion but is aimed at testing the limits of what a state can require women be told before getting abortions.

It would require doctors to tell women that abortions end human lives and may cause serious psychological problems, and that the women have legal relationship with her unborn children that are ended by abortion. ...

A lawsuit has been filed against a California college by a law firm representing the Minuteman Project alleging censorship after school officials denied the group permission to use its facilities for a town hall meeting.

Lawyer Michael Sands of the Pro Family Law Center said the activist group asked to use the school's facility for a town hall meeting before the 2006 election, but was denied because the school said it didn't allow its buildings to be used by "special interest or advocacy groups, nor for the advancement of specific candidates for public office."

However, after the request had been denied by Jamillah Moore, Interim Superintendent of Compton Community College, the Minuteman Project, which wanted to address the public issue of illegal immigration and the significant impact it has on the city of Compton and the surrounding cities, discovered several other advocacy groups had been granted permission for meetings there.

"Once you open up a school to one special interest group, you have to provide equal access," Sands told WND. "They (school officials) could be putting forth some sort of agenda. They have to open up their facilities to all other groups who properly apply for permission." ...

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and two other lawmakers are headed to Iraq this weekend as Congress engages in fierce debate over President Bush's plan to send 21,500 more troops to salvage the U.S. effort there.

Clinton, a Democrat from New York who is considering running for president, is traveling with Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., who had also eyed the 2008 race but opted out, and Rep. John McHugh, a Republican from upstate New York.

The three, all members of armed services committees, are to meet with top Iraqi officials and U.S. military commanders. The trip also takes them to Afghanistan.

The southern town of Ras Kamboni fell after five days of heavy fighting, Defense Minister Col. Barre "Hirale" Aden Shire told The Associated Press. He said government troops backed by Ethiopian forces and MiG fighter jets chased fleeing Islamic fighters into nearby forests and the fighting would continue. He did not give casualty figures.

Ras Kamboni is in a rugged coastal area a few miles from the Kenyan border. It is not far from the site of a U.S. air strike Monday that targeted suspected al Qaeda militants — the first U.S. offensive in Somalia since 18 American soldiers were killed here in 1993. ...

A leading mosque in London is selling DVDs that proclaim the coming mass extermination of Jews around the world on a "day of judgment." It also attacks Christian groups and the United Nations.

The London Central Mosque, also known as Regent's Park Mosque, is "the spiritual focal point for Muslims" throughout Great Britain, the European Jewish Press reported. It is also home to the Islamic Cultural Center, which educates Muslim children.

The report said that a British television station will air on Monday a documentary on Muslim extremism in Britain, and will report the selling of the DVD.

The DVDs are being sold at the London Central Mosque Shop. One excerpt shows a preacher, Sheikh Feiz, imitating the sounds of a pig and referring to the Jewish people who will be killed on the "day of judgment."...

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - A rocket struck the U.S. Embassy early Friday, exploding inside the modern, glass-fronted building and shattering hopes that Greece's leftist anti-American militant networks had been dismantled. Greek authorities said the attack, which caused no injuries, was probably carried out by a domestic terrorist group.

The small anti-tank missile, fired from across a six-lane boulevard, narrowly missed the large blue-and-white U.S. seal on the embassy's facade and the ambassador's office, and pierced the building above the front entrance shortly before 6 a.m. It damaged a third-floor bathroom and shattered windows in nearby buildings.

"There were no injuries and very minimal damage," U.S. Ambassador Charles Ries said outside the embassy.

The attack recalled the anti-capitalist and anti-American violence of past decades, which included the death of a CIA station chief and other American military and embassy officials, as well as a failed bomb attack against the U.S. Embassy in 1996.

New militant groups vehemently oppose the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq, amid widespread public opposition to Washington's policies which has remained strong since the United States provided support for a 1967-74 military dictatorship.

"It is very likely that this is the work of a domestic group," Public Order Minister Vyron Polydoras said. "We believe this effort to revive terrorism is deplorable and will not succeed."

He speculated that "this could be (guided) by the first generation of terrorists."

The 2.36-inch rocket, which police said was a weapon probably fired from a Russian-made launcher, struck a large marble beam on the third floor of the embassy, just above and to the left of the seal.

U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the United States was "not aware" of any indications that international terrorists had a role in the attack, but cautioned that the investigation was in its early stages. ...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The keepers of the "Doomsday Clock" plan to move its hands forward next Wednesday to reflect what they call worsening nuclear and climate threats to the world.

The symbolic clock, maintained by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, currently is set at seven minutes to midnight, with midnight marking global catastrophe.

The group did not say in which direction the hands would move. But in a news release previewing an event next Wednesday, they said the change was based on "worsening nuclear, climate threats" to the world.

"The major new step reflects growing concerns about a 'Second Nuclear Age' marked by grave threats, including: nuclear ambitions in Iran and North Korea, unsecured nuclear materials in Russia and elsewhere, the continuing 'launch-ready' status of 2,000 of the 25,000 nuclear weapons held by the U.S. and Russia, escalating terrorism, and new pressure from climate change for expanded civilian nuclear power that could increase proliferation risks," the release reads.

The clock was last pushed forward by two minutes to seven minutes to midnight in 2002 amid concerns about the proliferation of nuclear, biological and other weapons and the threat of terrorism. ...

NBC has plummeted to the level of CBS, with a late-night skit that blatantly mocks Christianity by portraying Jesus as a homosexual voyeur, a stunt that would have been instantly condemned nationwide if it had focused on any subject other than Christianity, according to a pro-life leader.

The show, an episode of "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," was taped and aired this week, and featured a skit with a character called "the homophobic country western singer," according to Douglas R. Scott Jr., the president of Life Decisions International.

It also was Scott, as WND reported then, who alerted people to the CBS portrayal during the Christmas season of a character singing about sex to the tune of "Joy to the World."

The latest exhibition by NBC is just as bad, he said.

"The NBC and CBS television networks may be rival corporations, but they have one thing in common," he said. "Both networks have allowed programming that blatantly mocks Christianity."

He told WND in an interview that the fact that such ridicule is allowed in the U.S. reflects more on Christians than on non-Christians.

"We've been put in the back of society's bus. The bad thing is we're willing to do it. If we responded like blacks, Jews, you name the different groups, homosexuals… If we responded like they do, only in love, this kind of thing wouldn't happen. It wouldn't be tolerated here," he said.

"I think God will not be mocked," he continued. "But I don't know if Christians who [believe that] think He'll take care of it, and we don't have to do anything. If we speak up for the unborn, if we speak up for any of these issues that have a relationship to Christ, but we don't speak up for Jesus himself, what are we?...

U.S. Secret Service agents, who earlier confiscated Gospel tracts from Christians in Texas and Nevada because they carry a message of salvation and an advisory that they are not legal tender even though they look like a $1 million bill, now have taken the same tracts away from a Los Angeles man.

Jim Thomas, who with his wife Charlene had just finished an evangelism training program at their church, told WND he was handing out the tracts near an escalator at a downtown Los Angeles mall "and everything was going very well."

Then, he said, a man approached him and told him that "there's a problem here."

He introduced himself as a Secret Service agent.

"He began to ask me questions, like 'have you read the rules and regulations about bills similar to currency?'" Thomas said. "So he just kind of informed me what I could do to be in compliance."

He said the officer suggested the bills be larger or smaller than regular currency, or be printed in black-and-white. Then he took Thomas' stack of the tracts, which look like a $1 million bill but have a 160-word Gospel message and other disclaimers.

The tracts are produced by Ray Comfort, an evangelist whose Living Waters Ministry in Southern California has been inundated with requests for them since the first Secret Service confiscation happened last year.

As WND reported at the time, the controversy began June 2 when three agents visited the Great News Network office in Texas and told a staffer to hand over the tracts.

That dispute currently is pending in the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in a case brought by the American Family Association Center for Law and Policy.

"I think someone who is partially blind may think it's a genuine bill if it's given to them at night in the fog," Comfort told WND. "Any bank teller who tries to give change for a million dollar bill should not be a bank teller."

He said the whole point of a tract is to get a reader's attention and carry a message, and that's what this does.

"It makes people laugh. Even if it wasn't a Gospel tract, I'd give them out, because they give a good feeling," Comfort said.

A U.S. Navy chaplain who prayed "in Jesus' name" as his conscience dictated is being ejected from the military service "in retaliation" for his victorious battle to change Navy policy that required religious rites be "non-sectarian."

"This fight cost me everything. My career is over, my family is now homeless, we've lost a million dollar pension, but Congress agreed with me and rescinded the Navy policy, so chaplains are free again to pray in Jesus' name," Chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt told WND. "My sacrifice purchased their freedom. My conscience is clear, the fight was worth it, and I'd do it all again."

Klingenschmitt, as WND has reported, has fought an extended battle with the Navy over its restrictions on religious expression by its chaplains. He appeared and delivered a public prayer "in Jesus' name" at a White House rally last winter and was court-martialed for that. The Navy convicted him of failing to follow a lawful order because his superior didn't want him praying "in Jesus' name."

He's also launched a legal battle that he said he hopes eventually will result in his reinstatement, alleging the Navy assembled a "civic religion" by ordering its chaplains to pray in a certain way.

"There's a Unitarian system of religion that's aimed at Christians," John Whitehead, founder of the The Rutherford Institute, told WND. "It boils down to that. We're seeing it all across the country, with council prayers, kids wanting to mention Jesus. What's going on here is it's generally a move in our government and military to set up a civic religion."

"I think the Supreme Court's going to have to look at the idea of can the government in any of its forms tell people how to pray, set up a basic religion and say you can only do it this way," he said.

Klingenschmitt told WND he'd been delivered a formal letter of reprimand for his appearance at a White House function in March 2006 at which he wore his uniform and prayed "in Jesus' name." For that he was convicted at a special court-martial of violating a lawful order from his commanding officer not to do that.

His appearance was with former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice and WND columnist Judge Roy Moore, who was removed from his office when he refused to follow a federal court order he considered unlawful: to remove a Ten Commandments monument from public property.

Klingenschmitt's $3,000 fine was suspended and because of the issues, Congress got involved and ordered the Navy to rescind that particular policy, and allow chaplains to pray as their "conscience dictates." ...

An annual North American Baptist Fellowship meeting in Atlanta, Ga., was scheduled to conclude Tuesday morning at the Carter Center with the announcement of a historic 2008 convocation.

The convocation, part of Carter's new Baptist voice initiative, is expected to draw more than 20,000 Baptist participants from throughout the United States and Canada in an effort to counter the negative and judgmental image of Baptists, according to the Associated Baptist Press.

CBNNews.com -- WASHINGTON -- France is "no longer a Catholic country." This declaration was published in France's Le Monde des Religions on January 9, reflecting the results of a recent poll taken in the nation.

It was disclosed that 51 percent of France's population considers themselves Catholic -- a drastic drop from the 80 percent reported in the early 1990s and the 67 percent tallied in 2000 -- according to a Wednesday report from The Daily Telegraph.

Le Monde des Religions' editor in chief Frederic Lenoir credits the waning numbers to several major factors. Among them are youth's disinterest in Catholicism, along with an increasing sense of individualism sweeping across the nation.

Also explaining the waning numbers, it was noted by The Telegraph that only half of the French who proclaim themselves to be Catholics said they actually believe in God.

Currently, 31 percent of the French population declares themselves as atheists, which has risen from 23 percent in 1994. ...

While most of the bill is good, it contains a provision, Section 220, that will severely limit the ability of Americans to stay abreast of the important issues facing our country.

Instead of addressing the true lobbying problems – high-paid lobbyists buying influence with members of Congress with international trips and fancy dinners – Section 220 will place the bulls-eye squarely on you.

Thousands of birds inexplicably dropped like rocks from the sky over Australia.

The mysterious catastrophe has taken place over a period of three weeks in Esperance, about 450 miles southeast of Perth. The area was declared a disaster zone by government officials.

So far, authorities are clueless as to the cause. Autopsies on the birds have shed no light.

The main casualties, according to Australian news sources, are wattle birds, yellow-throated miners, new holland honeyeaters and singing honeyeaters. Some dead crows, hawks and pigeons have also been found.

Some birds were seen convulsing when they died.

Wildlife officers are baffled by what they characterize as a "catastrophic" event. It does not appear to be weather-related.

District nature conservation coordinator Mike Fitzgerald said: "It's very substantial. We estimate several thousand birds are dead, although we don't have a clear number because of the large areas of bushland."

Birds Australia, the nation's main bird conservation group, said it had not heard of a similar occurrence. "Not on that scale, and all at the same time, and also the fact that it's several different species," chief executive Graeme Hamilton said. "You'd have to call that a most unusual event and one that we'd all have to be concerned about."

Just yesterday, some 60 birds fell out of the sky in Austin, Texas, without explanation.

Officials said they had tested the air for dangerous substances but found nothing, and they declared the area safe.

(AgapePress) - A pro-life biochemist and international expert on stem-cell research and cloning is hailing a new report that says powerful and potentially medically beneficial stem cells can be found in the amniotic fluid that cushions babies in the womb. However, he doubts the finding will have much impact on proponents of embryonic stem-cell research, or ESCR.

Harvard and Wake Forest University researchers have recently reported that they were able to extract stem cells from human amniotic fluid without harm to the mother or to the unborn child; and the extracted cells were able to become several different tissue cell types, including brain, liver, and bone.

Dr. David Prentice is senior fellow for life sciences at the Family Research Council and former professor of life sciences at Indiana State University. He says the report from Harvard and Wake Forest validates what the pro-life community has been saying all along.

"You don't need to go to the unethical and unsuccessful embryonic stem-cell research that requires destroying a human life," Prentice explains. "We have cells in amniotic fluid, placenta, umbilical cord blood, bone marrow, and lots of other tissues that can actually help patients," he says.

The Family Research Council's life sciences expert says news agencies are finally starting to recognize that ethical sources of stem cells for successful stem-cell research do exist. Many are beginning to acknowledge that "there are sources of stem cells ... that don't require destruction of human life," he says, "and we're seeing this more and more."...

(AgapePress) - A south Florida pastor whose views on Islam were critiqued on a CNN program examining racism and intolerance in America says several crucial points were left out of the airing of interview segments with him for the program.

Worldwide Christian Center pastor Dr. O'Neal Dozier was featured on a segment of Paula Zahn's nightly show last week because of his highly publicized grassroots efforts to keep a mosque out of a Northwest Pompano Beach neighborhood. A news story about him featured his opposition to the Islamic religion as a cult, and the city's approval of a mosque in an urban neighborhood that he says city leaders originally targeted for low-income housing. Included also was the pastor's concern that the mosque would be a potential recruiting location for possible future terrorists.

But according to Dr. Dozier, there was much left out of the interview. "I thought there were more crucial things that I said in [the interview] that were not aired," he says. For example, he explains, comments that specifically outlined biblical reasons for his opposition to Islam.

"I said that Jesus Christ is the only Way," says the pastor. "I quoted the verse there [John 14:6] ... Therefore one cannot be saved outside of Jesus Christ. I said that Islam cannot get one to heaven." And inclusion of that statement, he says, would have explained another unaired statement -- that President Bush and his administration need to stop referring to the "war with terrorists" and, instead, call it what it is: a war with Islamic fascism...

...The Indiana House has opened its 2007 session with an official prayer that was carefully crafted so as not to violate a federal judge's ban on sectarian invocations. The brief prayer by new House Speaker Patrick Bauer was directed to "almighty God" but contained no specific references to Christianity. Judge David Hamilton ruled in November 2005 that official House prayers that mentioned Jesus Christ or used terms such as "Savior" amounted to state endorsement of a religion. That case is now on appeal before the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago. State Representative Brian Bosma, who was speaker at the time of the ruling, has argued that Hamilton's ruling is unconstitutional because it blocks the free exercise of religion. [AP]

50 Militants Said Killed in Iraq Battle

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - U.S. and Iraqi soldiers, backed by American warplanes, battled suspected insurgents for hours Tuesday in central Baghdad, and 50 militant fighters were killed, the Defense Ministry said.

Elsewhere, a cargo plane carrying Turkish construction workers crashed during landing at an airport near Baghdad, killing 30 people and injuring two, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said. Initial reports indicated the plane crashed due to bad weather and heavy fog, a Foreign Ministry official said on condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not yet been authorized.

U.S. helicopters circled above the Haifa Street area where the battle took place, and witnesses said they had seen the aircraft firing into the combat zone. Explosions rang out across the area, just north of the heavily fortified Green Zone.

Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Shaker, a ministry spokesman, said 21 militants were captured, including seven foreign Arabs - including three Syrians - and one Sudanese.

Police said the clashes began when gunmen attacked Iraqi army checkpoints, and that Iraqi soldiers called for U.S. military help.

Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said Iraqi forces had decided to wipe out "terrorist hide-outs" in the area once and for all. "God willing, Haifa Street will never threaten the Iraqi people again," he said.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - U.S. helicopter gunships launched new attacks Tuesday against suspected al-Qaida members, a Somali official said, a day after forces launched airstrikes in the first offensive in the African country since 18 U.S. troops were killed there in 1993.

Monday's attack was the first overt military action by the U.S. in Somalia since it led a U.N. force in the 1990s that intervened in Somalia in an effort to fight famine. The mission led to clashes between U.N. forces and Somali warlords, including the "Black Hawk Down" battle that left 18 U.S. servicemen dead.

Helicopter gunships launched new attacks Tuesday near the scene of a U.S. airstrike in the village of Hayi, although it was not clear if they were American or Ethiopian aircraft, and it was not known if there were any casualties.

Two helicopters "fired several rockets toward the road that leads to the Kenyan border," said Ali Seed Yusuf, a resident of the town of Afmadow in southern Somalia.

The aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower arrived off Somalia's coast and launched intelligence-gathering missions over Somalia, the military said. Three other U.S. warships are conducting anti-terror operations off the Somali coast.

U.S. warships have been seeking to capture al-Qaida members thought to be fleeing Somalia after Ethiopia invaded Dec. 24 in support of the government and drove the Islamic militia out of the capital and toward the Kenyan border.

The White House would not confirm the attack, nor would the Pentagon.

But a U.S. government official said at least one AC-130 gunship was used. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the operation's sensitivity.

AC-130 gunships have elaborate sensors that can go after targets day or night. They are operated by the Special Operations Command and have been used heavily against the Taliban in Afghanistan...

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea is likely to test another nuclear device, the commander of U.S. military in South Korea said on Tuesday, but he declined to comment on reports that an explosion was imminent.

South Korean officials have said activity had been spotted near a suspected nuclear test site in North Korea but there was no evidence to suggest Pyongyang was about to test again. The North conducted its first test in October.

"There is no reason to believe that at some time in the future, when it serves their purposes, that they won't test another one," General B.B. Bell told a news conference.

"So I suspect some day they will," Bell said.

Christian critics claim that the seminar, to be conducted by the group Hizb ut-Tahrir, will be a recruiting ground for extremists.

Hizb ut-Tahrir believes that the caliphate — a part of the world under Muslim rule that, at its peak, ran from Spain to Iran and beyond — is about to be re-established.

Hizb ut-Tahrir is banned in Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and most Muslim countries in the Middle East because of alleged links to terrorism, including the bombers behind the 2005 London attacks.

It is not banned in Australia but is controversial because it opposes democracy and Muslim integration, has tried to recruit young Muslims and ran a lecture last year titled "Israel is an illegal state that Muslims will never accept"...

The pro-Muslim media made much of the fact that the Koran came from Jefferson’s library, making the bitter pill go down easier (I have a Satanic Bible in my library to better know my enemy). Jefferson was in a battle with Muslims over their slave trading.

With all the media praise for this act of tolerance, there was no mention of the gastly facts about the Koran. It teaches:

And now London could be home to the largest Mosque outside of the Middle East.

Today, a neglected piece of real estate on London's east end sees little more than commuter trains rumbling past it. But it's the future location of what some say will be the biggest Islamic in-road into Christendom in 400 years: a gigantic mosque complex, the likes of which the West has never seen.

A video from the Web site of the mosque architect Ali Mangera shows what will be called the London Markaz, a 17-acre Islamic worship center for as many as 70,000 Muslims. Planned to be the hub of an Islamic quarter for the 2012 London Olympics, it will dwarf many of Britain's Christian cathedrals.

CBNNews.com -- AUSTIN, Texas - Police shut down 10 blocks of businesses in the heart of downtown Monday morning after dozens of birds were found dead in the streets, but officials said preliminary tests showed no air quality problems and the area reopened around 1 p.m.

As many as 60 dead pigeons, sparrows and grackles were found overnight along Congress Avenue, a main route through downtown. No human injuries or illnesses were reported.

"We do not feel there is a threat to the public health," said Adolfo Valadez, the medical director for Austin and Travis County Health and Human Services.

He said preliminary air-quality tests showed no dangerous chemicals, though the dead birds would be sent for further testing to rule out viruses or poison.

CBNNews.com -- NEW YORK -- They bombarded 911 with calls, crowded the sidewalks in front of evacuated buildings and tuned to the news for word of what was happening. The question on the minds of many New Yorkers on Monday morning was: "What's that smell?"

A natural gas-like odor hung over much of Manhattan and parts of New Jersey, confounding authorities. The smell seemed to be gone by early afternoon.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said there was no indication the air was unsafe. "It may just be an unpleasant smell," he said. He said sensors did not show an unusually high concentration of natural gas, and Con Edison reported it found no gas leaks.

The mayor said the smell may have been caused by a leak of a substance called mercaptan that is added to natural gas for safety reasons to give it a recognizable odor. By itself, natural gas is odorless.

Some commuter trains running between New Jersey and Manhattan were suspended for about an hour as a precaution. A few city schools were briefly evacuated. Some apartment dwellers were advised to close their windows.

Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke said there was nothing to suggest terrorism.

WASHINGTON (BP)--Scientists have announced the discovery of cells that have much the same potential as embryonic stem cells but without their ethical drawback, even as the House of Representatives prepares to vote again to fund experiments that destroy human embryos.

A team of researchers from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital in Boston found the stem cells in the amniotic fluid of pregnant women, according to The Washington Post. Unlike embryonic stem cell research, the extraction of the cells from the fluid that surrounds an unborn child does not require the destruction of a tiny human being. These cells have the ability to develop into a variety of tissues, a trait of embryonic stem cells, but do not have the tendency to form tumors, a propensity that has plagued research on cells from embryos.

The promising research, reported Jan. 7 in the online version of the journal Nature Biotechnology, was announced only days before the House is set to vote on a bill identical to one President Bush vetoed last year. The vote on the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, H.R. 3, is expected to take place by Jan. 11. The measure would provide federal funds for research using stem cells extracted from embryos stored at in vitro fertilization clinics.

This is a jarring view of parents who are creating a generation of undisciplined, spoiled, self-centered, mean, little rebels.

The prophet Isaiah’s words are appropriate for our generation: “I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them. And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient” (Isaiah 3:4).

The parents of these children get to keep their children, though they engaged in the very worst form of child abuse. They failed to teach children to respect and obey authority. The Bible says, “Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord,” (Colossians 3:20).

CBNNews.com -- RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) -- A man walked into a church, doused a nativity scene with a flammable liquid and set it ablaze in front of a practicing choir, police said.

Robert Mills, 40, of San Pablo, was arrested Friday night while hiding in a park minutes after police said he walked into St. Cornelius Parish and announced he was going to set the church on fire.

Mills told everyone to leave but blocked the doorway until he began showering the sanctuary with the liquid, giving choir members a chance to escape, said Richmond Police Lt. Enos Johnson.

The fire destroyed the nativity scene, a lectern and carpeting, and caused extensive smoke damage. No one was injured.

JERUSALEM – Palestinians in the Gaza Strip today announced the formation of what they say is a new "resistance" group to carry out attacks against the United States, Israel and Iran in the name of executed former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

The new purported organization, the Saddam Hussein Martyrs Brigades, will "hit America, Israel, Iran and all the traitors to our people," according to a pamphlet distributed today in the densely populated Gaza Strip city of Khan Yunis and obtained by WND.

"The Zionists and Americans will not dream of more invasion because the reaction of our wing will be very painful. The cells of our organization are spread all around Palestine," the pamphlet stated.

When the first Muslim congressman in U.S. history, Keith Ellison (Hakim-Mohammed) of Minnesota, won the 2006 election and was making the regular thank-you-to-my-supporters speech, he allowed his fans to shout, "Allahu Akbar!," the same phrase allegedly used by the 9/11 suicide pilots.

Since November he's addressed various different Islamic groups and organizations, and he's used the Quran to be sworn into office. He's also been linked to Islamic organizations with questionable agendas.

What he hasn't done is respond to requests from WND to confirm that he will, in fact, base his decisions on the laws of the United States on the U.S. Constitution, not the Quran.

A lawyer whose client is on trial for having "militia" weaponry says he'll ask questions and raise arguments about the 2nd Amendment, and then let the judge rule whether or not the Bill of Rights can be discussed in a federal courtroom these days.

A federal prosecutor in the Arkansas case against Hollis Wayne Fincher, 60, who's accused of having homemade and unregistered machine guns, has asked the judge to censor those arguments.

But lawyer Oscar Stilley told WND that he'll go ahead with the arguments.

"I'm going to ask questions, what else can I say?" he said. "There is a 2nd Amendment, and it means something, I hope."

"His (Fincher's) position is that he had a legal right to bear arms that are suitable and customary to contribute to the common defense. If it's a militia army, it's what customarily would be used by the military suitable for the defense of the country," Stilley said.

The objection to constitutional arguments came from Assistant U.S. Attorney Wendy Johnson, who filed a motion several days ago asking U.S. District Judge Jimm Larry Hendren to prevent Fincher and Stilley from raising any such issues.

"Yes, that is correct – the government does not want to allow the defense attorney to argue the law in Mr. Fincher's defense," Michael Gaddy wrote on Freedom Watch.

"If a defendant is not allowed to base his/her defense on the Constitution, the supreme law of the land, we are certainly doomed. If we allow these criminal acts perpetrated on law-abiding citizens to continue, we might as well turn in all our guns and scheduled a fitting for our chains," he wrote.

"Yes, Hollis Wayne Fincher goes on trial on January 8th – but so does our Constitution, our Liberty and our right to own firearms. If Mr. Fincher loses this battle, we all lose," he said.

Fincher, a lieutenant commander with the Militia of Washington County, is accused of having three unregistered machine guns and an unregistered sawed-off shotgun.

Stilley said his client believes no one has a right to use weapons to hurt somebody else, just as "you can't use words to injure. You can't yell 'fire' in a crowded theater."...

Iran will press ahead with nuclear work: president

TEHRAN (Reuters) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday Iran would not retreat from its right to nuclear technology and that a U.N. resolution imposing sanctions on Iran was "invalid."

"The Iranian nation is wise and will stick to its nuclear work and is ready to defend it completely," Ahmadinejad said in a televised speech to a rally in the southern city of Ahvaz.

"The U.N. resolution against Iran's atomic work has no validity for Iranians. It is illegal and politically motivated."

The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously on December 23 to impose sanctions on Iran's trade in sensitive nuclear materials and technology in an attempt to stop uranium enrichment work that could produce material that could be used in bombs.

Ahmadinejad said some world powers were bullying Iran over its nuclear program. "If bullying powers ... want to resist (Iranians' will), we will give them a historic slap in the face," he said, as the crowd chanted "Death to America."

Iran, the world's fourth largest oil exporter, insists it wants to produce fuel for nuclear power plants and dismisses charges it is trying to produce nuclear weapons.

Government spokesman Gholamhossein Elham, echoing the tough line taken by Iranian leaders, indicated on Tuesday that Iran might cold-shoulder the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by quitting the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

"It is up to the government to decide whether it wants to pull out of the NPT, if pressured," Elham told a weekly news conference.

Iran's parliament reacted to the U.N. sanctions by passing a bill on Wednesday obliging the government to "revise" its level of cooperation with the IAEA and to accelerate its drive to master nuclear technology.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has the final say in nuclear and other matters and he, like Ahmadinejad, has insisted Iran will not give up its atomic plans.

Ahmadinejad said Iran's nuclear program was not a threat to Middle East stability.

"Iran's power is not a threat to any regional country ... Our power is at the service of the region's peace, stability and development," he said, speaking in the capital of Khuzestan province, the heartland of Iran's oil industry.

U.S. and British officials have accused Iran of aiding terrorism and armed groups inside Iraq, undermining the Lebanese government and blocking Israeli-Palestinian peace.

Ahmadinejad accused the United States and Britain, which led the invasion of Iraq in 2003, of creating tension in the region. "By imposing insecurity and ethnic clashes in Iraq, they want to strengthen their presence in the region," he said. "But sooner or later the occupiers will have to leave Iraq."

In what has become an annual tradition of prognostications, religious broadcaster Pat Robertson said Tuesday God has told him that a terrorist attack on the United States would result in "mass killing" late in 2007.

"I'm not necessarily saying it's going to be nuclear," he said during his news-and-talk television show "The 700 Club" on the Christian Broadcasting Network. "The Lord didn't say nuclear. But I do believe it will be something like that."

Robertson said God told him during a recent prayer retreat that major cities and possibly millions of people will be affected by the attack, which should take place sometime after September.

Robertson said God also told him that the U.S. only feigns friendship with Israel and that U.S. policies are pushing Israel toward "national suicide."

Robertson suggested in January 2006 that God punished then-Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon with a stroke for ceding Israeli- controlled land to the Palestinians.

The broadcaster predicted in January 2004 that President Bush would easily win re-election. Bush won 51 percent of the vote that fall, beating Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.

In 2005, Robertson predicted that Bush would have victory after victory in his second term. He said Social Security reform proposals would be approved and Bush would nominate conservative judges to federal courts.

Lawmakers confirmed Bush's 2005 nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. But the president's Social Security initiative was stalled.

"I have a relatively good track record," he said. "Sometimes I miss."

In May, Robertson said God told him that storms and possibly a tsunami were to crash into America's coastline in 2006. Even though the U.S. was not hit with a tsunami, Robertson on Tuesday cited last spring's heavy rains and flooding in New England as partly fulfilling the prediction.

Darlene Bishop, a tele-evangelist with a nationwide following, does not do things by half. When she and her husband Lawrence erected a statue of Jesus on the grounds of their mega church in Monroe, Ohio, they made it 62 feet high.

No less gargantuan are her claims about the power of prayer to overcome illness. Through a series of sermons, books and a television show, Sisters, broadcast on religious satellite channels throughout the US and abroad, she preaches that God has the power to heal even the most deadly diseases, including cancer.

But the contention is now the subject of a court action. Four of Mrs Bishop's relatives are suing her over her claim that God cured their father - her brother - of throat cancer. He died of the disease 18 months ago.
In her book Your Life Follows Your Words, Mrs Bishop tells how she overcame her breast cancer through prayer, and how her brother was also cured. There is no mention of his death in the book, which she says is due to the fact that it was published at a time when he had been in remission for more than a year.

But the volume is still on sale through her website (price $15) under the blurb: "How God healed her of breast cancer and her brother healed from throat cancer".

Mrs Bishop's brother, Darrell "Wayne" Perry, was an accomplished songwriter whose work has been performed by big names in country music such as Tim McGraw, and by the Backstreet Boys. For a year before his death in May 2005, aged 55, he was cared for by his sister.

His children, Bryan, Justin, Olivia and Christian, have issued a lawsuit for wrongful death against Mrs Bishop because they claim she persuaded Perry to stop chemotherapy and rely instead on God's healing. They contend in legal depositions that at the moment Mrs Bishop and her brother were touring the country preaching about the miracle of his recovery, they were both aware that he had been advised by doctors that his illness was terminal.

In a separate legal action to be heard on Friday they also accuse Mrs Bishop of probate irregularities and of mishandling her brother's estate. "I am the oldest son of Wayne Perry", Bryan has written, "and I think it's a damn shame that we have to spend our money fighting our aunt."

In her blog, Mrs Bishop dismisses the allegations as "complete lies", insisting she would never tell anyone to refuse medical help. "I encouraged him to listen to the doctors, but he refused surgery."

There is no sign of Mrs Bishop falling on her sword. The motto of her church, founded in 1978, is: "Because Emmanuel lives, I expect victory every time."

The Junior Scholastic "news magazine" that is written for elementary students and used in thousands of public schools across the United States has published an article promoting "madrassa" school life for American children who are Muslims, much to the outrage of some parents.

"Remember way back in grade school and getting Junior Scholastic magazine in school? Well here is an example of what JS has devolved into. Force-feeding the barbaric propaganda of Islamic madrassas down the throats of my 7th and 4th graders. Disgusting," a father wrote WND about the issue, published in November.

Scholastic spokeswoman Jennifer Slackman told WND there are very few topics the magazine will not cover if they are brought up in classrooms or coming up in current events.

The particular story, "Inside a Madrasa, U.S. kids talk about their daily lives at an Islamic school in Pakistan," was written by Cassandra Nelson in view of "helping students learn about the world they live in. That world does include religion and a variety of cultures," Slackman told WND.

However, WND has reported that Islamic factions now are taking part in the development and editing processes for textbooks in U.S. public schools, how some schools have required students to "become Muslim" and memorize the "Five Pillars of Islam" during their public school coursework, and how a man once arrested as a terror suspect for allegedly trying to transport $340,000 from a group tied to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi helped write the "Religious Expression in Public Schools" guidelines issued by President Clinton during his tenure in office.

"The article tells of Noor (now 15) who grew up in Atlanta, Ga. A 'few' years ago his family traveled to Pakistan on vacation with his father and just before heading back to the U.S. his father drops him in the Pakistani madrassa to rot for the last 3 years or so. … Where are the child advocacy lawyers when you need them!! Can these parents be brought up on charges?" the concerned parent wrote.

"The Junior Scholastic article then mentions this little lovely tidbit of information about the pursuit of knowledge. 'I never planned on reading or memorizing the Koran' Noor tells JS (Junior Scholastic). 'I wanted to go to school in America and become something big. But now I've missed so much school [back home], I will never be able to catch up,'" the parent said.

The article talks about how female students follow "strict codes of behavior and dress," and it lists a "typical day" at the school, which runs from a 4:30 a.m. wakeup call to an 11 p.m. bedtime, and includes time for morning prayers, lessons from the Quran, classes on Islamic law, classes on memorization of the Quran, classes on Islamic history, midday prayers, afternoon prayers, evening prayers, late-evening prayers, and more lessons from the Quran.

"Sharia (Islamic religious law) and democracy cannot coexist in the same space and time," the concerned parent wrote. "The PC mentality is going to cost us a lot of U.S. lives, probably ultimately to the point that we'll lose one of our cities to a jihadist nuclear weapon of some sort."

As far as this promotion in U.S. public schools? "All religions are equally valid. Uh-huh, yeah right. Let's have a show of hands of people who want their daughter to be subjected to a Sharia-following Muslim husband," he said. "Sharia-endorsing mosques and their members in the U.S. should be ostracized and blackballed like communists during the '50s."

The article minimizes the admitted use of such schools to train youth in a hatred of Christianity and the West, quoting a 15-year-old student from Chicago that, "We learn about mercy and love here. You won't find any hate."

This even though the Quran contains instructions to "behead" infidels and accept them only if they follow Islam.

"There is no terrorism in Islam. Anyone who commits violent attacks in the name of Islam is wrong. Most Muslims want a world that is peaceful, in which there is no terrorism and people live together without fighting. We want a world where the teachings of Allah [God] are followed – a world in which people are modest in attitude and appearances," the magazine quotes Mohammad Yusef saying.

The Junior Scholastic article was accompanied by an available online teacher's edition showing how to promote the study of the madrassa: "We hope readers will enjoy this visit to a foreign school – which begins with a headmaster's wake-up calls at 4:30 a.m.," wrote Suzanne McCabe, editor at Scholastic.

The magazine's goals are to have students in U.S. public schools "describe a typical school day" at the madrassa and references additional materials including a text titled, "Ten Things to Know about Islam."

It also has a crossword puzzle teaching children the "Muslims' name for God" and the rules of the religious schools. And another proposed project has students compare their own lives and schools to those of the madrassa students.

The concerned parent said he would agree with John Lewis, an assistant professor of history at Ashland University, who said America needs to destroy Islam as a political influence.

Lewis presented his arguments at the Ayn Rand Institute's OCON conference "The Jihad Against the West" in Boston in October. In an article in The Objective Standard, he elaborated:

He said the terrorist attacks on the U.S. came from foreign governments that "have sponsored such attacks for years" and were motivated by "a militaristic, religious-political ideology that values war as a demonstration of loyalty to a deity, demands obedience to its spokesmen, and imposes its edicts over millions of people."

"Thousands of individuals, indoctrinated as youths, are eager to engage in suicide attacks," he wrote. "The enemy's children and soldiers memorize words such as these: The battlefield is where our army displays its true character, conquering whenever it attacks, winning whenever it engages in combat, in order to spread our deity's reign far and wide, so that the enemy may look up in awe to his august virtues.'"

He said that the children are taught from the Quran such mandates as: "[F]ight and slay the unbelievers wherever you find them, seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem of war; but if they repent, and practice our way, then accept them. …"

He wrote that a strong offense doesn't create new enemies; it defeats existing foes, and "all-out force against fanatical killers is both practical and moral."

He said the conflict between Islam and Christian is not a clash between civilizations, "it is a clash between civilization and barbarism. Until civilized people assert themselves with a depth of moral confidence exceeding that projected by those who submit to the 'will of Allah,' America will remain permanently on the defensive, in a state of moral dhimmitude, and the war will continue to its logical conclusion: a mushroom cloud over America."

The concerned parent told WND that Prime Minister John Howard of Australia, who has told militant Islamics that if they don't agree with the freedoms basic to Australia, they should leave, "seems to be the only intelligent leader of the free world. Why don't we loan him our military for a few months?"

A recent report in the Irish Times also noted that Colin Powell, who was secretary of state in 2004 when he made the statement, called madrassas breeding grounds for "fundamentalists and terrorists." Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld had questioned: "Are we capturing, killing or deterring and dissuading more terrorists every day than the madrassas and the radical clerics are recruiting, training and deploying against us?"

Earlier, WND reported that The American Textbook Council found that textbooks for children in U.S. public schools these days reflect "the interplay of determined Islamic political activists, textbook editors, and multiculturally minded social studies curriculum planners."

It has gone so far that correcting the situation now becomes a problem, because "educational publishers and educational organizations have bought into claims propounded by Islamists – and have themselves become agents of misinformation."

That comes from Gilbert T. Sewall, who wrote the organization's report on Islam and textbooks. And Middle East Forum director Daniel Pipes even has repeatedly expressed concern about the "privileging of Islam in the United States" and warns the stakes go well beyond 7th-grade texts. His opinion of Houghton Mifflin's "Across the Centuries"? Full of "apologetics."

Sewall said his study showed world history textbooks "hold Islam and other non-Western civilizations to different standards than those that apply to the West" even while "Islamic pressure groups and their allies seek to suppress the critical analysis of Islam inside and outside classrooms.

"Textbook editors seem not to recognize that a school-related Islamic agenda in the U.S. uses multiculturalism as a device to guarantee a purely favorable and uncritical view of all things Muslim. At extremes, the report suggested, multiculturalism contributes to a form of peaceable cultural jihad meant to discredit or 'problematize' European civilization in favor of non-Western cultures," he wrote.

CBNNews.com -- JERUSALEM -- Israeli army chief Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz acknowledged to reporters Tuesday that Israel was unsuccessful in meeting its goals in the war last summer against Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.

Halutz refused requests to resign and asserted that Hezbollah endured extensive losses at the hands of Israeli forces, which killed "hundreds of terrorists," in the conflict. No decisive victor emerged from the war, which ended in 34 days with a cease-fire.

"We were not successful in reducing the short-range rocket fire on Israel's north until the cease-fire," admitted Halutz as he addressed internal and external inquiries into the short conflict.

Some 4,000 rockets were launched by Hezbollah at Israel during the summer war.

Halutz's resignation can be forced by a government-appointed committee investigating the conflict and its outcome.

When asked about the possibility of his stepping down, Halutz commented that he has no desire to walk away and would like to "correct what can be corrected." He added that leaving now would be nothing less than "running away."

Halutz noted, "I have not heard my superiors calling on me to resign," but insisted that "If they do, I will respond."

A former chief of staff concluded that objectives in the conflict were loosely set before pointing out mistakes made in the command centers, Halutz told reporters.

"There were cases in which officers did not carry out their assignments, and cases in which officers objected on moral grounds to their orders," commented Halutz, who seemed to be referring to dissent against military advances on towns and villages in southern Lebanon.

Halutz also indicated that diplomatic means should be used to free the two Israeli soldiers captured in a cross-border Hezbollah raid rather than military maneuvers.

Longer annual service and better training of reservists should be implemented in order for Israel's forces to become stronger, declared Halutz. He also mentioned that the government could suspend the enforcing of a plan to shorten the term of regular service, which is currently designated at three years.

The U.N. Security Council's resolution set up a "beefed-up" peacekeeping force in Southern Lebanon at the end of the war with Hezbollah on August 14. It was determined to keep the area free of armed forces.

Israeli and Hezbollah forces combined for more than 1,000 casualties. The number was compiled by the U.N., Israeli and Lebanese officials.

Israel suffered 159 fatalities, which includes 39 civilian deaths from rocket attacks.

Even though Israel lists the number of Hezbollah fighter casualties at 600, Hezbollah reports that its losses are closer to 250.

CBNNews.com -- BOSTON -- Massachusetts Legislature voted Tuesday to put through the proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in a crucial decision that could place the measure on the ballot in 2008.

As legislators arrived to vote on a possible amendment to constitution that would define marriage exclusively as a union between a man and a woman, supporters and opponents of the measure waved signs just outside the Statehouse in Boston.

In order to get the amendment on the 2008 ballot, 170,000 signatures were collected by supporters. However, approval from the Legislature is still required.

The legislative session came to a close Tuesday with Senate President Robert Travaglini not disclosing whether he will demand a vote. Backers of the amendment were upset last fall when Legislature was dismissed without casting its vote.

"Legislators are sent to Beacon Hill to vote on a matter, not to not vote on a matter," stated Paul Ferro, a 30-year-old amendment supporter from Norton.

After the 2003 Supreme Judicial Court ruling that the state Constitution guarantees the right of marriage to gays, approximately 8,000 same-sex couples in Massachusetts were joined in wedlock. Civil unions are offered in a few other states, where gays couples are given similar rights. Massachusetts remains the only state, however, that has made gay marriage legal.

If the proposed amendment passes, the existing 8,000 marriages would not be dissolved, but future same-sex marriages would be banned.

Amendment backers rallied with signs stating, "Let the People Vote," on the steps of the Statehouse Tuesday. A common consensus among supporters was that people, not the courts, should be given the power to define something as crucial as the institution of marriage.

On the other side, opponents to the amendment stood with signs donning statements such as, "Let the people marry." They contended that the civil rights of a minority should not be determined by a popular vote.

Some in the Legislature commented that they would not vote on the marriage amendment because discrimination would be written into the constitution through the ballot question.

Inciting the Legislature to not vote on banning same-sex marriage, Massachusetts' governor elect stated, "adults should be free to choose whome they with to love and marry."

Democrat Deval Patrick contests that the debate is "a question of conscience," adding that the state's intervening into private matters "is a dangerous precedent, and an unworthy one."
